Study shows spectrum of laparoscopic operations on the pancreas which are performed at the Department of Surgery in F. D. Roosevelt Hospital in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia. In period 2005–2010 totaly 17 laparoscopic operation on the pancreas were performed – 7 enucleations, 3 tumor resections only and 7 distal pancreatectomies. There were zero mortality, in 2 patients developed pancreatic fistula which was healed after conservative treatment. Laparoscopic operation on the pancreas are standard treatment of resectable tumors of the body and tail of the pancreas at the surgical departments where advanced laparoscopy is performed.

Technological research and development introduces new instruments. These instruments result in new innovative procedures in medicine. Some of these procedures have definitively settled in modern medicine and we cannot imagine current surgery without them. Some of them diminished after their temporary boom. A new method using natural orifice for surgery has been established in the beginning of this millennium – Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery – NOTES. Two strong medical societies – Surgical and Endoscopical, stand by its beginning. It brings many questions for discussion. The aim of this article comes to think...

Background: High-energy sources applied in laparoscopic surgery carry risk of thermal injury. Such complications remain serious medical and medicolegal problem despite technological advances and improved surgical safety awarness. Material and methods: Analysis of a prospective database of laparoscopic procedures. Results: 2 cases of thermal injury were identified in 3,157 procedures (0.06 %). Monopolar electrocautery was used in both incidents. Mechanism of injury varied – direct coupling and direct injury out of the field of vision due to damaged insulation of the instrument were identified as potential casuses. Clinical presentation...

Bariatric-metabolic surgery is nowadays fully accepted therapeutic modality in the treatment of severe obese patiens. There is no procedure to be called the gold standard. Therefore the search continues. Recently starts gaining popularity procedure, first presented in 2007, called LGCP (laparoscopic greater curvature plication). It is volume reductive procedure. The volume reduction is made by greater curvature plication. The authors present case report- the first one in their department. The description of operative technique and endoscopic view is presented.

Aim of Study: Introduction of “outside-inside-out” arthroscopic technique for treatment of tibial intercondylar spike avulsion. Material and Methods: The technique takes advantage of arthroscopy in treatment of type II and III tibial intercondylar spike avulsions with use of Kirschner wires. 35 patients were operated and evaluated. Results: No neurologic or vascular complications were noticed. Two patients underwent manipulation under GA for persistent joint stiffness postoperatively. Very good results were observed in 74 %, in 5 % we found temporary instability, in 11.5 % we observed residual instability, 6 % (2 cases) had to...

The surgical repair of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) has a major role to play nowadays, but due to aging of the population will be even more important in the future. There are many innovative changes in the concept of POP surgery during last decade, especially in new techniques and implants to reach the optimal tissue support. The POP is a multicompartmental disorder and usually consists of urethrocele, cystocele, uterine or vaginal vault prolapse, enterocoele or rectocele. We summarize the evolution of the newest techniques of sacrocolpopexy especially using the da Vinci surgical robotic system and we evaluate the current role of robotic sacrocolpopexy...

Benign obstruction disease of salivary gland ducts due to the inflammation or sialolithiasis is the most common salivary gland disorder. Its exact incidence is not known. About 3.7 % of population suffer from salivary gland duct strictures or obstructions (sialolithiasis affects 1.2 % of adult population). The benign obstruction disease diagnostics is based on the patient history, clinical examination and ultrasound. However, these methods are not usefull for particular evaluation of salivary duct system. The treatment of reccurent salivary gland inflammation frequently is salivary gland ablation with lost of its function. The miniinvasive...

Aim: Aim of this publication is to summarize information about photoselective vaporization of prostate (PVP). Methods: All publications connected with mesh terms „photoselective vaporization prostate“ were searched in Medline database. This review is based on this publication and on our experiences with PVP. Results: PVP improves significantly symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Complication rate of PVP is lower than complication rate of transurethral resection of prostate (TURP). Time of catheterization and hospitalization after PVP is shorter than after TURP. Long term results of PVP are not available yet. Conclusions:...
