The review article highlights some ideas and experience related to laparoscopic surgical treatment for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. It is based on the experience at our centre where 3 036 laparoscopic antireflux surgeries for gastro-oesophageal reflux and hiatal hernia were performed in 14 years. Significant chapters include considerations on preoperative tests, indications and contraindications for operations, and operative technique.

In 2004, forty-five bariatric surgeries were performed in Slovakia. Three other laparoscopic gastric surgeries were done in the same year, namely partial wedge resections for benign tumours. Also performed were 70 suture repairs of perforated gastroduodenal ulcers in that year. In 2007, a total of 875 operations on the stomach and duodenum (without suturing of perforated ulcer) were performed in Slovakia. Out of these, 40 were done laparoscopically, which constitutes 4.6 %. To date, a total of 25 laparoscopic gastric resections have been performed at the Surgical Department in Žilina. The first operation was done in 2006 and it was a wedge resection...

Aim: To compare laparoscopic gastric resections in the world and in the Czech Republic. The author presents a short history of laparoscopic gastric surgeries, an overview of the most commonly indicated procedures, and the criteria for indication, mentions necessary technical equipment, evaluates the pitfalls and benefits of laparoscopic resections, and reflects on the options of and criteria for performing these procedures in the conditions of the Czech Republic. Conclusion: Laparoscopic resection has become an alternative to open resection. Given the small number of these procedures, it is advisable to refer both laparoscopic and open resections...

Obesity epidemic and continuosly increasing prevalence of obesity represents serious social, economic and health care problem worldwide. Morbid obesity and obesity related metabolic diseases, such as Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus dramatically decrease life expectation in obese population. Bariatric surgery is nowadays the only long term effective obesity treatment method. It has been shown that surgical treatment of obesity is effective not only in achieving substantial weight loss, however it leads in more than 80 % of T2DM to improvement or resolution of their diabetes. Such results are reported in T2 diabetic patients treated with insulin as well....

Objective: to assess owvn experience with diagnosis and treatment of urolithiasis in pregnancy Material and methods: 21 pregnant vomen (average age 21 years, range 21–39 years) was evaluated in retrospective analysis. The localisation of stones were: ureter (in 17/21 (81 %)), kidney (in 4/21 (19 %)), right (in 16 (76 %)), left (in 5/21 (24 %)) pregnant patients. Positive history of urolithiasis (before pregnancy) was noted in 4/21 (19 %) women. Symptoms of urolithiasis were: flank pain (in 14/21 (66 %)), flank pain plus fever more than 38 °C (in 5/21 (24 %)), gross hematuria (in 1/21 (5 %)) and irritative lower urinary tract symptoms (in...

daVinci robotic radical prostatectomy is the most common urologic procedure in our Centre of robotic surgery in Hospital Na Homolce Prague. We describe our current technique and evaluate our early experience with this novel robot-assisted laparoscopic technique for radical prostatectomy that has been performed in patients with prostate cancer and with intent of curative treatment. The daVinci robotic system makes it easier to move from open to laparoscopic technique. Minimally invasive robotic assisted technique enables to limit the morbidity of open radical prostatectomy with shorter convalescence and safety for patients and shorter learning curve...

Explosive development of imaging methods in the second half of 20th century profoundly influenced the contents of gastroenterology. Digestive endoscopy gained a leading position during this time period. The achievements of technical disciplines enabled to introduce new endoscopic approaches (fiberscopy, videoendscopy, capsule endoscopy, endosonography) and consequently a series of new diagnostic and therapeutic methods. The future of digestive endoscopy is bright. Its development will again depend on suitable applications of technical discoveries. This is a never-ending task.
