Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration is an endoscopic method of sampling pathological structures within gastrointestinal
wall or adjacent organs using aspiration needle under endosonographic control. Main indications include: masses and lymphadenopathy
in posterior mediastinum, oesophageal and gastric submucosal tumors as well as intramural processes of unclear etiology, nodal staging
of pulmonary, oesophageal and gastric cancer, unclear focal lesions in the pancreas and left lobe of the liver. Rapid on-site cytopathology
increases diagnostic accuracy of EUS-FNA. The method is safe with the incidence of complications in less than 3 %. The authors inform
about indications, technique, pitfalls and complications of the method.
