Introduction: Haemorrhoidectomy can be performed using several different types of procedure, from simple excision of nodules, followed
by dopler-guided haemorrhoidal artery ligation and finally with the Longo procedure. The aim of this study was to present first
experiences with the new method – haemorrhoidectomy with the Ligasure device.
Methods: Prospective unicentric study was performed to asses efficacy and safety of haemorrhoidectomy with the Ligasure bipolar
coagulation device. The analysis focuses on early surgical complications.
Results: In the period of 10 months (1st January–31 st October 2008), the Ligasure haemorrhoidectomy was performed at the Department
of Surgery Kolín´s Hospital in 51 patients (100 %). There was 30 men (58,8 %) and 20 women (41,2 %). Major complications with the need
of reoperation were observed in 2 patients (3,9 %), both of them suffering from massive delayed bleeding 5–7 days after surgery. No
patients in the study died.
Conclusion: Main advantages of the Ligasure haemorrhoidectomy are quickness and simplicity of the procedure, less bleeding resulting
in good survey during surgery and reduction of pain in postoperative course. According to our experience, delayed bleeding 5–7 days
after surgery, when the coagulation necrosis probably separates, remains the main risk factor of the procedure.
