Objectives: Ovarian cancer comprises almost a quarter of all malignancies of the female genital tract. Its incidence in the Czech Republic
is 24 per 100,000 women per year. In comparison with its incidence, the mortality rate remains relatively high, with a mortality ratio
of 14 per 100,000 women per year. The five-year survival rate increases very slowly. The aim of our work was to analyse the results by
laparoscopy – an “open procedure” that was performed at our department in 2003–2008.
Materials and Methods: A total of 24 patients underwent laparoscopy – an “open procedure” between the years 2003–2008 at our clinic.
The operation time, complications, blood loss, histological findings and further follow-up were documented.
Results: The mean time of operation was 50 minutes. No surgical peroperative complications were recorded. The representative samples
for histology were obtained in all patients. The mean hospitalisation following operation was 7 days. We observed no port-site metastasis.
Twelve patients died, the mean survival time was 11,4 months.
Conclusion: “Open laparoscopy” might be considered to be a safe, relatively minimally invasive, and reliable operative-diagnostic
method that enables direct visualisation of the abdominal cavity and almost absolute histological verification of advanced intraabdominal
malignancies.
